What is NIMC (National Identity Management Commission)?
The NIMC (pronounced as “Neem-See”) is the primary legal institution in Nigeria mandated by law to institutionalize the identity management system and regulate the identity sector. (NIMC Act 2007; Sections 1, 2, 5 and 6).
What is the National Identification Number (NIN)?
The National Identification Number-NIN (pronounced as “Neen”) is a unique number issued by NIMC to a successful enrolled individual. This number is randomly generated and it is issued for life.
Who should register and get a NIN?
All Nigerian citizens and legal residents are eligible to enroll for the National Identification Number (NIN).
What is the NIN used for?
The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual into the National Identity Database and it is also used as a valid means of establishing or verifying individual identity.

What is Diaspora Enrolment?
NIMC with the help of accredited vendors are enrolling all Nigerians both within and outside Nigeria to avail Nigerians in the Diaspora the benefits of being included in the National Identity Database. For more Diaspora specific information, click here.
What documents do I need?
You’ll need your Nigerian Passport, and if applicable, birth, marriage, and divorce certificates, along with your BVN if you have one. If you don’t have a Nigerian Passport, you’ll need your parent’s Nigerian Passport to prove your Nigerian descent.
NIN registration is free in Nigeria, why do Nigerians in Diaspora have to pay for it?
The fees for Diaspora registration go into infrastructure, operational, administrative costs, and other expenses incurred in bringing the services to the doorsteps of Nigerians in the Diaspora. These costs are borne by NIMC Diaspora partners and accredited vendors whereas in Nigeria the fees are subsidized by the government. NIMC Diaspora partners charge the recommended fees for Diaspora enrolment to enable Nigerians in the Diaspora benefit from being included in the National Identity Database.
How long does it take for the NIN to be ready?
Typically 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the situation.
Can I display my NIN along with my contact details on cards or social media?
No. The NIN is your unique identification number to be protected like your ATM/Debit/Credit card number or PIN. It is neither a receipt number nor a certificate number.
Will the NIN be tied to personal bank accounts?
The NIN is being harmonized with BVN (biometric verification number) for Nigeria banks account but it is not harmonized to other non-Nigeria bank accounts
I lost my NIN Slip, how can I obtain another one?
Pay the applicable fee at your nearest ERC and request for a NIN slip print.
